Taking care of ourselves sometimes seems selfish. We feel guilty if we take too much “me time.” The fact is, to be mentally, physically and emotionally well, we have to take time to do things that help us recharge.
If we don’t slow down and reflect on the issues in our own hearts and minds, we tend to be distracted and in the wrong frame of mind to serve others. If you are worried about being too selfish, begin self-care slowly.
Start by doing one thing each day that you do just for yourself, such as enjoying a cup of coffee, reading a chapter in a book, watching an episode of a TV program, or spending 30 minutes exercising. According to WebMD.com, a little time out for yourself can reduce stress and restore energy.
Think about a car. If a car needs repairs or an oil change, it doesn’t run properly. You wouldn’t keep driving a car that has a flat tire, would you? Self-care is essential if we want to operate at full capacity, so begin slowly and start to care for yourself without feeling guilty.
